Overview
Regardless of the software you choose, we have experienced 4 keys to success with BIM
- Clear Goals - Before even embarking on a BIM project understand why you are doing it in the first place
- People - Make sure that your staff understand the goals and that you have support from an experienced group
- Tools - Software is important, but only 1 key. Revit is not BIM; it is a tool for BIM. For an integrated BIM approach, understand what tools enable you to meet your goals
- Plan - A BIM Implementation Plan is critical. The following steps should be part of any such plan
Goals
There are a myriad of potential reasons for inplementing BIM. The following are some of the most prominent, but you cannot possibly achieve all of them without a plan.
- More Coordinated Delivery Process
- Increased Productivity
- More Time for Design
- Less Rework
- Winning More Projects
- Cost Certainty
- Facilities management
- Building Performance Analysis
Implementation
Our proven Structured Implementation approach was developed with Autodesk and includes a combination of planning, training and guidance insuring that your organization can smoothly adopt to the process changes surrounding BIM. A standard structured implementation includes a customized version of the following stages.
Engaging BIM Effectively
Standardized Engagement Stages
Building Information Modeling with Revit is a change in process. In order to integrate this change into your conventional workflow and leverage the benefits to gain a competitive advantage, a structured implementation is necessary. The following are the stages in Summit's approach:
Stage 1 - Plan
Assesment
Review of current processes with representatives of your organization; evaluation of projects, available staff, existing technology to determine where you think BIM can improve your process.
Project Plan
A plan and roadmap need to be agreed upon prior to continuing with the implementation. Model setup, phasing strategies, sharing requirements and collaboration between consultants will be studied to arrive at the plan during this phase.
Stage 2 - Train
Management Training
This is a half or one day workshop to discuss the potential uses for Revit and the project-wide effects of a BIM implementation. This will ensure that the entire firm and project team has matching BIM goals.
Foundations Training
Revit Foundations covers the basics of the Revit platform, emphasizing the change in a BIM process, enabling the team to understand the potential and determine how best to utilize BIM. Although this training enables users to begin to model, further focused training to get the most out of the BIM will be required.
Orientation Workshop
Before a project is commenced, a meeting of all team members will help orient them to the needs and setup of the model. SummitBIM will be involved, especially if part of the model management team.
Stage 3 - Setup
Collaboration Workshop
In any situation where multiple consultants are involved in the BIM process, it is recommended that 1/2 to 1 day workshop be held for optimal communication and coordination. In addition, it is at this meeting that the baseline BIM expectations are set out to the entire team.
Project Setup/Start-up
Summit implementation specialists will work with the project team to determine proper Revit protocols. This stage will differ depending on whether the client or Summit will be managing the model.
In-depth Training
A series of in-depth courses will be recommended as the project progresses to elaborate on key necessary to the project and not covered in Foundations Training.
Stage 4 - Partner
Project Guidance
There will always be a requirement for assisting the BIM team, even if all of the above steps are undertaken. However, experience shows that this hands-on mentoring will be optimized if a proper implementation has been undertaken.
Mentoring
BIM is a new and different process. It requires confidence that deliverables will be prepared at appropriate times. Support from our experienced team is necessary to insure that the team maintains the model and meets project milestones.
The Summit Commitment
We will work with your entire team to determine what you want to get from BIM and ensure that you actually engage in a process that will get you there. Start with the end in mind at the beginning to get the most out of BIM.
